Annurca apple: you’ll be conquered by its delicious taste!

An apple a day, keeps the doctor away…

Maybe the most ancient fruit (let’s think of the Holy Bible and mythology), and one of the first fruit names we’ve learnt in our life. Always associated to something evil, like the forbidden fruit or Snow White’s poisoned apple, on the contrary it is a very healthy fruit!

Rich in water, apple has few calories, healthy sugars, and Vitamin A, B, C and E. It’s very digestible, you can eat both its pulp and skin and you have loads of varieties: Red Delicious, Renette, Fuji, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith... and we could go on like that till mentioning fifteenish more ones.

Annurca apple

Annurca apple is cultivated in Campania region and has got the PGI label (Protected Geographical Indication) in 2006, as it is a really special apple, sometimes called “the queen of the apples”.

This is a select apple variety that can reach a big size and come in two colors, which also determine its taste: the yellow-green one is slightly acid, while the white-spotted red variety is sweeter. In both cases, the pulp is hard and juicy.

One of the territories where annurca apple is cultivated is Sant’Agata dè Goti. In the province of the city of Benevento, it is a picturesque old village that rises up a hill that overlooks a deep valley. Beyond apples, here olive oil, cherries and wine are the most typical products.

You should go and enjoy the “Falanghina Felix” festival, where the VIP is the homonymous wine, Falanghina (Controlled Designation of Origin labelled), as well as another CDO labelled wine, the Aglianico. Beyond that, you could also enjoy sightseeing and admire all the churches and the old castle. Put Sant’Agata dè Goti in your destinations list!

Appetizer with the annurca apple

Well, more than an appetizer WITH the annurca apple, we should say IN...

All you need for this easy and fast recipe is (beyond annurca apple, of course):

  • nuts;
  • carrots;
  • lettuce;
  • cheese;
  • other vegetables and the food you like the most in a salad;
  • mayonnaise, pepper, salt to season.

All you have to do is scooping the apple out, dripping some lemon juice into the empty apple to prevent it from turning brown, and then preparing your salad to place in the apple, which will be your fancy cup where your “appeti-salad” will be served.

Ideal as a refreshing summery appetizer to share with friends!
