30 marvellous uses of the salt (from the past)

14,000 different uses of the salt, episode one.

I know it's hardly believable, but there are over 14,000 different uses of the salt! In the past our grandmothers knew them nearly all. Many of those uses were associated with simple chores, before the arrival of modern chemicals and cleaning. However, they remain valid nowadays and are often much cheaper than the new products.

Salt

We can not guarantee a specific result, but there must be a reason for which they have been used in homes for centuries. And many of those have withstood the test of time.

Here are some of our recommendations on the use of salt in the kitchen (sorry, we won't get even closer to 14,000...).

  1. Boiling water - the salt water increases the boiling point: food cooks more quickly;
  2. peel the eggs - cook the eggs in salty water makes them easier to peel;
  3. test the freshness of the eggs - put the egg into a cup with two teaspoons of salt: a fresh egg sink on the bottom, an old egg floats;
  4. clean the refrigerator - a mixture of mineral water and salt are great for cleaning the inside of a refrigerator;
  5. improve the taste of birds - sprinkle the inside and the skin of birds before roasting, serve to make it more tasty and crunchy;
  6. remove the feathers - to remove the feathers from a bird, rub the skin with salt (vegetarian/vegan guys, I beg your forgiveness: several tips come from the past!);
  7. clean the silverware - rub it with salt before washing;
  8. prevent the browning of fruits and vegetables - apples, pears and potatoes dipped in lightly salted water retain their color;
  9. clean greased pans - the pot will clean more easily with a pinch of salt;
  10. clean stained cups - rubbing a cup with salt will remove stains of tea or coffee;
  11. clean the oven - salt and cinnamon remove the smell of burnt food from the oven. Spray the powder of salt and cinnamon when the furnace is still hot, then remove it with a brush;
  12. extinguish fires from fats (like oil): the salt, spread in pan or oven, dampens the fires caused by burning fat;
  13. remove the onion smell from the hands - rub your hands with a mixture of salt and vinegar;
  14. clean the pipes of the sink - pour a solution of salt water into the sink, it prevents disgusting odors and dirt encrusted in the pipes (what are you going to do with your sink?!?);
  15. clean the cutting board - after washing it with soap and water, wipe the bottom and the edges of the cutting board with a damp cloth dipped in salt. All stains will be gone. Furthermore, for the antiseptic properties of the salt, the cutting board will be disinfected;
  16. whipped cream - by adding a pinch of salt,  both the cream than the white of the egg stabilizes and mounts faster;
  17. prevent the mold - to prevent mold on cheese, wrap it in a cloth dampened with salt water before putting it in the refrigerator;
  18. preserve the milk - by adding a pinch of salt the milk will last longer;
  19. clean the brass - mix equal parts of salt, vinegar and flour to make a paste. Spread the paste on the object and leave it on for one hour. Wash off the dough with a damp cloth and dry;
  20. clean the wicker - to prevent yellowing, scrub wicker furniture with a brush soaked in warm salt water. Allow to dry in the sun;
  21. clean grease stains from carpets - some grease stains can be removed with a solution formed by one part of salt and four parts of alcohol;
  22. extend the life of a broom - the brooms will last longer if, before their first use, will be soaked in warm salted water;
  23. remove wine stains - if you spill wine on a tissue (tablecloth, carpet, shirt, ...), dry it as soon as possible and cover the stain with salt, which will absorb the remaining wine. Then wash the tissue with cold water;
  24. remove stains from the furniture - white spots left by hot or wet pans may be removed by rubbing a paste of edible oil and salt on the stain, leaving it for an hour or two;
  25. renew a sponge - give sponges a new life by immersing them in salt water;
  26. remove the foam - if the washing machine produces too much foam, sprinkle with salt to eliminate it;
  27. brighten up the colors - wash colored garments in a saltwater solution to brighten the colors. The discolored carpets and tablecloths will have a new life when you will rub them vigorously, with a cloth dipped in a very salty solution;
  28. remove sweat stains - add four tablespoons of salt to a quart of warm water and rub the cloth until the stain disappears;
  29. bleach cotton or linen - boil the yellowed items for one hour in a solution of salt and baking soda;
  30. remove mildew or rust stains - moisten the stain with a mixture of lemon juice and salt, then lay the object in the sun (if possible).
